IBEW 984 Members,

Spring is here and Summer is just around the corner. I hope you all get a chance to enjoy the mild weather while it lasts!
I would like to take this opportunity to update you on some recent success stories and challenges that lie ahead for Local 984.

SUCCESS STORIES

- On 3/30/2010 IBEW Local 984 established a Policy Against Sexual Harassment.  The policy can be viewed on our website at www.ibew984.org.

- We were successful in obtaining radiological survey work on a proposed railroad project with Washington Closure Hanford.  Some of that work had been slated for non-bargaining personnel.

- The Local has purchased Union Liability Insurance to help protect our assets. This is a direct result from the recent actions taken against HAMTC that ended up costing all of the affiliates.

- Mario Diaz accepted the position of Site Chief Steward for Local 984.

- Our membership continues to increase. Currently, we have around 900 members! (Over 800 RCT/HPT/RPTs, 69 IHTs, 13 HSTs & 9 QATs)

UPCOMING CHALLENGES

- A WRPS termination grievance is currently working its way through the system.

- We have several AREVA grievances that will likely move to arbitration.  One of them deals with hiring a temporary Health & Safety Technician (HST) not bound by our Collective Bargaining Agreement.

- A CHPRC grievance dealing with forced overtime has been moved on to arbitration.

- HAMTC/Battelle contract negotiations are moving slowly.  Benefits and wages are currently being discussed.

- Continuing efforts to get back IHT work at CHPRC that was lost during the Fluor regime.

Sadly, the Local is reporting the passing of two members in 2010 - Kip Graham and Kevin Noack.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends.

I want to remind you all that several WRPS employees (not from our Local) have recently been terminated for time card irregularities.  Be sure that you are accurately recording your working hours - not doing so could result in job loss!

I would also like you to keep an eye on your fellow workers with the hot weather approaching.  Working together, we have a much better chance of keeping everyone safe in those hazardous working environments.

Have a safe and enjoyable Summer!

Fraternally,

Terry Cherney
Business Manager/Financial Secretary
